CORRESPONDENCE

A DUSTY ROAD

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —I would like to endorse the | feelings expressed by "Observer" and "Snow White" regarding the disgraceful state of the surface of the southern portion of Waiwhetu Road. The unhygienic, dust-composed air which the residents and the infant population have to inhale is bad enough, but when one is subject to a minor earthquake every time a motor vehicle passes over the many corrugations in this road surface it is indeed most disturbing. The matter is rapidly becoming one of grave concern and reflects a shortsighted policy of a so-called progrcs-' sive Borough Council representative of all sections of the community.—l am, etc., DUSTY SHOES. "Health First"' also emphasises the necessity of doings something to abate the nuisance. The correspondent states: "A large majority of the population ol | this road are babies and young children. The societies that exist, for the benefit of the health of the young advocate keeping windows open wide and babies sleeping out of doors, in the daytime especially. This is impossible with the clouds of dust continually on the road. Prams with babies in are greeted with a dust-laden atmosphere on emerging out of doors, and the buses are coated inside and outside —quite an unsuitable atmosphere for both young and old. Apart from the main road running north through the Hutt township, this road carries more traffic than any other road in the Valley.
