IN HUTT VALLEY

PROGRAMMES FIXED

Much of the work in connection with Physical Fitness Week and its observance in the Hutt Valley has already been carried out, and very comprehensive arrangements have been made. The following programme submitted by the joint committee of the Hutt and Petone Physical Welfare and Recreation Committees has been approved by the Hutt committee:— Saturday, February 18.—Swimming and life-saving on Petone Beach; walking excursions under the direction of the Tararua Tramping Club. Sunday.—Ministers to be asked to make reference to the week in their sermons. Monday.—Boating carnival Petone Beach; the usual weekly meeting of the Lower Hutt Amateur Athletic Club at the Hutt Recreation Ground. Tuesday.—Youth night at the Hutt Recreation Ground. Wednesday.—Sports meeting at' the Petone Recreation Ground. Thursday.—Swimming carnival at the Riddiford Baths, Lower Hutt. Friday.—A parade through both boroughs, representative of sports bodies and other organisations. Saturday, February 25.—Beach carnival at Petone. No charges are to be made, but voluntary contributions will be accepted. At a recent meeting the Petone committee also approved the programme, with one or two alterations. The Petone committee does not believe that the parade scheduled for Friday would be productive of success. It also suggests that at the Wednesday sports meeting, events should include wrestling and a secondary schopls relay. UPPER HUTT ABRANGfeMENTS. In Upper Hutt, a mass sports demon-stration-will take place on February 25. At a recent meeting presided over by the Mayor, Mr, P. Robertson, twenty sports bodies were represented. Schoolchildren and members of sporting bodies in their playing attire are to assemble at the Courthouse grounds at 12.30 p.m. on February 25, under the control of Sergeant-Major J. King. They will then march to Maidstone Park in a procession headed by the Upper Hutt Municipal Band. A committee has been set up to arrange the following attractions:—Exhibition basketball game, national dancing, boxing, fire brigades demonstration, riding, fancy dress football, folk dancing by schoolchildren, and a gymnasium display. Mr. N. Edwards. New Zealand tennis singles champion, who is a native of Upper Hutt, is to be asked to attend the gathering.
