A NEW CHAMPION
VAN DERBY'S GREAT WIN
Enthusiasm knew no bounds at the Auckland Trots on Saturday afternoon wbhen in a special match race over a mile Van Derby beat Lawn Derby by over a length in 2min 1 l-ssec, which is an Australian and New Zealand grass track record. Van Derby was in front throughout, and although Lawn Derby made a valiant effort over the last furlong he had no chance of making up the leeway.
It is interesting to note the wide difference in the handicapping of this Australian pair. Lawn Derby is assessed as a lOsec better horse than his half-brother, over all distances, and this undoubtedly adds, greatly to ■ the merit of Van Derby's achievement. Both pacers are products of Roselawn, Lawn Derby claiming Robert Derby as his sire and Van Derby Globe Derby.
