ELECTION ISSUE
STATE OF PARTIES
DECISION ABOUT 10.30 P.M.
COUNTING OF VOTES
Taking into account the clear-cut issue in the General Election on Saturday and the fact that in only eight of the 76 European seats will there be triangular contests, the Chief Electoral Officer (Mr. G. G. tjodgkins) expects that" the state of the parties will be known about 10.30 p.m.
Mr. Hodgkins said today that the count would be facilitated by the fact that there were only two candidates in most electorates. In some of the country" districts where there would be only 400 or 500 votes to count the work should be completed before 8 o'clock. Any delay in such cases would be owing to the time required to communicate the result to the returning officer. The big counts were in the main centres, but he expected that most of the returns would be known by 8.30 p.m.
