PAREMATA GOLF
Playing in the final of the senior championship for the Mahon Cup at
Paremata yesterday, T. Allen beat E. I. Wilkie 9 and 7. Allen, who has been playing particularly steady golf lately, established a lead of 5 up at the end of the first eighteen holes over his opponent, and though he challenged hard,. Wilkie was unable to check Allen's run of successes. On their long game there was not a great deal of difference between them, but Allen's putting was very accurate throughout. It was definitely one of Wilkie's off days. His form up to now suggested that he would have given Allen a considerably harder run for it, as he is one of the most consistent players in the club.
The junior championship final between F. Petrie and I. Phaup for the Petrie Cup was won by Phaup, 4 and 2. Here again putting won the game for Phaup, who was remarkably accurate on the greens. This game improved the further it went, and over the second eighteen holes both players turned on some fine golf, with Petrie pressing Phaup hard all the time. The past season has brought Phaup's game out, and his match with A. R. Perry in the semi-final on Saturday seemed to put him in trim for the final with Petrie, who was regarded as a very difficult man to displace. Another championship final was that between M. Willis and J. Jones and £• ?• Perry and A. McNaught in the loursomes division, the former pair winning the Moston Cup by the narrow margin of 2 and 1.
