ABOUT BROWNIE CARSLAKE

Brownie Carslake, who was gaining his third success in the event when he steered Scottish Union to victory in the St. Leger Stakes recently, is now in his fifty-second year, but he seems to be riding as well as he ever did. A son of I. T. Carslake, he was born in Melbourne on July 14, 1887, and it was in Victoria that he did his early riding. In 1905 he won the City Handicap on Fulminator at Adelaide and after that success he decided to try his il luck in England. Carslake's first stay in England was brief, as he accepted a retainer to ride for the Royal Graditz Stud in Germany and met with considerable success. Then he went to Austria, and was riding'there when war broke out. He had some difficulty in escaping internment -. and getting out of the country, which he did by way of Russia. It took him thirteen days to reach Moscow. He rode winners there, but when the revolution broke out in 1917 he had to make a hurried exit from the country. When he reached England he was offered a retainer,to ride for the stable of Atty Persse at Stockbridge, and from that time he never looked tback.
