THE MAN OF THE SAXOPHONE

A fund has been opened in Din ant, Belgium, to erect a statue to Adolphus Sax, Belgian inventor of the saxophone, who was born at Dinant on September 8, 1814. Son of a postman and himself a postman, Sax was a clever clarinet maker when a boy. The saxophone, invented in 1844, two years after he moved to Paris, involved him in endless litigation with 'French instrument makers. Sax was championed by such prominent musi-cians-and composers as Berlioz, Halevy, Meyerbeer, and Rossini. Sax created a sensation at the Crystal Palace Exposition in London by showing a "saxophone" measuring 48ft by 21ft, with a mouthpiece three feet wide. This did not satisfy him. He suggested construction of a giant £400,000 instrument to rest on four big towers, the drums to be covered with elephant skins and played by steam-driven .sticks, ■..-■-
