WOMEN'S CLUBS MEET

The September meeting of the Lower Hutt branch of the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union took place in St. James's Hall, Woburn Road, yesterday when Mrs. R. V. Brown presided over a very good attendance. Seven new members were enrolled and an invitation was extended to members by Mrs. O. S. Heymann to attend a demonstration of Continental bread-mak-ing at her home in Laery Street this evening and tomorrow morning. A "'Bring and Buy" stall, in charge of Mesdames G. F. Yerex and E. W. R. Haldane, will be held at the next meeting bf the branch to assist an urgent and necessitous case of illness. Further funds to assist will come from a levy voted by the members themselves and also from the proceeds of a garden-party after Christmas. By the courtesy of the W.D.F.U. an open meeting of the women's organisations of Lower Hutt followed having been called for the purpose of setting up a committee to. arrange study circles

in preparation for the Pan-Pacific Conference of Women in 1940. Referring to this object the Mayoress of Lower Hutt, Mrs. J. W. Andrews, who was in the chair, said: "We must lay a foundation in these study circles of extended knowledge so that at least we can be able to listen intelligently to the distinguished -women visitors from overseas whom we will be privileged to hear." The circles Will study the outlines of the cultural contributions bf all the countries bordering on the Pacific and their economic interdependence, and will meet monthly in the Methodist Hall. The organising committee elected comprised:—Mrs. C. Nicholls (president), Mrs. A. E. Hurrell (secretary), Mrs. N. N. Benstead (Townswomen's Guild), Mrs. T. Oswin (W.D.F.U.), Mrs; H. D. Bennett (Women's Institutes), and Mrs. V. Vinsen (Alicetown Women's Club). Mrs. J. Williams will also act on the committee in an advisory capacity.

The room was beautifully, decorated with spring flowers and heliotrope stocks and a delicious afternoon tea was provided and served by the ladies of the W.D.F.U. Mrs. Andrews, on behalf of the associations present, thanked the branch very warmly for their kindness in convening the meeting and for their hospitality. Three Pleasant Parties. A "happy birthday"' party celebrating the third anniversary of the Maori Girls' Club of the Te Ropu Association was held in ' the Maori Hall, Lower Hutt, on Tuesday night. The club colours of red and white were incorporated in the long panels of Native design which form the principal feature in the main hall and the stage decorations of tree-ferns and flax were artistically arranged with scarlet rhododendrons. A parade of fancy costumes which were judged by Mrs. J. C. Burns and Mrs. R. C. Kirk gave additional colour and aniriiation to the scene, the closely-contested awards being made as follows:—Best couple (Maoris), Miss Rosie Ed win and Mr.' Renata Taylor; best girl (karaka leaves), Miss Miriama Jones; best "boy" (pirate), Miss Mary Sanderson; special (negro bridal pair), Misses Poko Love and Joyce Edwin; comical pair, Misses Joyce and Jean Brace. A good programme of music was given by a Maori band both for the parade and for the dancing which -was directed by an efficient M.C, Mr. M. Love, and an exhibition Pf tap dancing by Miss Muri Love was warmly applauded. A tempting supper was laid in the long supper-room adjoining, where an artistically decorated birthday cake held pride of place in an effective setting of red and white streamers and dainty epergnes of spring flowers. The guests of the evening were the president, Mrs. Hapi Love (iri a gown o fblack lace and georgette), the vicepresidents, Mrs. J. W. Andrews (in black velvet), Mrs. R. C. Kirk (tabac brown lace with a coatee of matching velvet), Mrs. J. C. Burns (deep blue crepe-suede patterned in white), also the Mayor of Lower Hutt, Mr. J. W. Andrews, who attended later in the evening. The arrangement of this happy and successful function was in the capable charge of the club committee consisting of Mrs. W. Edwin, chairman (black lace with scarlet flowers), Mrs. Rio Love, secretary (Island dancing costume with ceremonial headdress and lei of narcissi), Mrs. " M. Love, treasurer (navy blue crepe), Mesdames Te Waari (black matalasse), E. Lyle (black lace), M. Everson (black cloque with jacket of scarlet taffetas), T. Rereti (black matt crepe with sequins), H. Colson (terra cotta satinbacked crepe). Successful Labour Social. The Hutt Valley women's branch of the New Zealand Labour Party celebrated its fourth birthday last night with a concert and social evening held in St. James's Hall, which was fiblled to capacity for the occasion. The setting of the concert platform was particularly attractive, massed arum lilies at either side, tall vases of bright pink and white blossom and a striking sheaf of pink lilies being most artistically arranged and thrown into relief by the background of black hangings. In front of the stage stood j the birthday cake of delicate pink and cerise surmounted by four chubby j pink kewpies. The "several items of i

the short concert programme were of high standard and met with wellmerited applause, especially two brackets of duets delightfully sung by Mrs. G. Millward and Mr. F. Bryant. Character sketches were given by Mesdames Rae and A. Huggan, and songs by Mrs. Gorton and Mr. Marshall. Melville McGrath, in national costume, gave a clever exhibition of an Irish jig and a charming bevy of children in Dutch dress and sabots presented a pictureseque and animated tap-bal-let. These juvenile performers were Jeanette Harris, Edwin Payne, Shirley Gosse, Staveley Jones, Barbara Delaney, Valeric Bornholdt, June Parker, Valeric Rabbitt, Peggy Willis, Ngaire Swift, Shirley Rabbitt, and Nelda Moore. Mr. J; Mann accompanied, and incidental music was supplied by Messrs. G. Kaye and D. Gillies. A;oneact play by members of the Elizabeth McComb Club, entitled "Women at War," and depicting a [ scene during the Cromwellian civil war was admirably staged and costumed to period, j the characters being well-sustained by Mesdames P. Dowse, H. Baxter, Grace, and G. Suters, and Misses L. Reynolds, B. Shepherd, and D. Harris. ; Mrs. P. Dowse produced the play and acted as announcer through the evening. At the pleasant and informal supper which followed. Mr. H. Combs,, Labour candidate for Wellington Suburbs, cut the cake and congratulated the ladies on the happy celebration. . Basketball Dancers. Rand\vick Basketball Club members were hostesses to the clubs of the Hutt Valley Basketball Sub-Asso-ciation at an enjoyable and wellattended dance held in the Oddfellows' Hall, Petone, on Tuesday, night .to mark the end of the season and form a fitting occasion for the presentation of inter-club trophies by Mrs. Andrews, patroness of the association.

Mrs. Andrews, who was wearing a slim-fitting frock of black chiffon velvet with a pearl clasp at the throat, congratulated all the teams participating on the keeri and friendly spirit prevailing and specially the winners, who were: —Randwick senior Al (captained by Miss Ida Lambourne), Andrews Shield for H.VB.A.'s A grade teams; Mac Duffs (Petone) (captained by Miss .A. Kilminster), Andrews Shield for B grade; Randwick Cl (captained by Miss Edna Sergent), Andrews Shield for C grade; Randwick Al, Clio Cup for annual tournament; Convent Old Girls, Harrup Cup, for runners-up. On behalf of the winning Randwick teams, Mr. D. Harris (chairman of the club) tendered their warmest thanks to Mrs. O. Reid, the club's coach, and presented her with a scarlet referee's blazer of the H.V.B.A. As a ipark of their appreciation of his close connection and interest in the club, Mr. Harris was also presented with a token of esteem. Other guest? of honour present were Mrs. H. Weenink (secretary of the H.V.8.A.), and Mr, H. , Crankshaw, vice-president of the club.

-The hall was gaily decorated with streamers, and dancing went with a swing to the music of an excellent ladies' orchestra under the direction of Mr. F. McLoughliri, M.C. The dainty supper served was also in the hands of the club committee, Which comprised Mrs. A. Hall (violet moire taffetas), Misses I. Lambourrie (blue cloque), W. Lambourrie (black velvet), G. McLaggan, (rose pink lace) X M. TyrralT (nile green l,ace), T. Stewart; (black ring velvet), and B. Marston (black taftetas spangled with sequins).
