MIXED FEELINGS
REACTIONS ELSEWHERE
LONDON, September 27.
All the French newspapers were reduced to six pages today. The Press is unanimous in saying that Herr Hitler's speech has still left a pathw.ay to peace, and expresses relief that no order for general mobilisation was given. This is mingled with misgivings concerning the assurances that Germany is not interested in the nonGerman parts of Czechoslovakia. President Roosevelt's message is interpreted as being something more than a plea for peace.
In Rome Herr Hitler's speech is regarded as a constructive and responsible effort for peace. • The demand for the withdrawal of Czech troops is considered justified on the ground that Herr Hitler is willing to accept international control pending the ensuing plebiscite.
The Berlin Press today makes no reference to Mr. Chamberlain's early morning appeal or the statement of the solidarity of France, Britain, and Russia. Comment is devoted entirely to Herr Hitler's Godesberg memorandum and his speech last night, which has caused the public to hope and believe that the problem may be solved peacefully on October 1. The hope is based on Herr Hitler's statement that Germany is only concerned with the Sudetens.
Polish circles received Herr Hitlers speech. favourably, describing it as a clear statement of ideas for a peaceful settlement. Political circles do not doubt that Herr Hitler will act forcefully if the Sudeten areas are not yielded on October 1. The statement that Germany's territorial demands will be satisfied when she obtains the Sudetenland, with the reference to a Polish non-aggression pact, are taken as an assurance that- no attempt is likely to be made to regain former German territory which is now Polish.
