The new watercourse, the bed of which is seen on the right of the wall, has a concrete floor. Buttress-weirs are spaced all along to reduce the speed of the current when in flood. On the extreme right a workman is seen above a big pulley "oiling up" a British shovel, of which several are in use on the job. It iveighs 22 tons.
