SCOUT NOTES

(By "Keego.") Thought for the Week. Life is a leaf of paper white, Whereon each one of us may write His word or two, and then comes night. —LOWELL. Trinity Methodist. The Trinity Methodist group celebrated its fourteenth birthday with a good attendance of parents and friends. The Cub pack performed the Dance of Baloo, and played star games. The Scouts also played games and put on •two displays. The plan of the Scout 1 programme was excellent in that it involved the preparation of,gear by the j Scouts entirely on their dvyn, without adult assistance and in view of the audience. First, they constructed stretchers, and proceeded to give a demonstration of stretcher drill, 'and I later they made ladders with rope and their staves, and demonstrated their use. In both cases the patrols were the units. A going-up ceremony was held at which two Cubs were promoted from the pack to the troop. The evening closed with supper, at which there was a splendid birthday cake with fourteen candles, given by Mr. Wray. Wellington South. The Old Wolves of the Wellington South .district met for their monthly council on Thursday, September 15. Tonu, District Commissioner, was present and gave a full account of the 1939-40 jamboree proposals as discussed at the recent meeting. The Old Wolves are going to tramp round to Red Rocks on Saturday, October 8. (Note the change in date.) They will leave the Island Bay terminus at 10.30 a.m. Any Scouters in the Metropolitan Area are invited to join. "Sea Catch," CM. Ist. Seatoun Pack, and Miss Mary Scanlon, Acting A.C.M. St. Anne's, will not be able to be there by 10.30, but leave Island Bay at 1 o'clock, and should arrive at the stream about 2.30. Any friends from other, districts who cannot leave at 10.30 may join this later contingent. For information ring Taka, 25-806. Island Bay Bapiist. The Island Bay Baptist pack held a "parent's evening" on Tuesday, September 20, and a very happy time was spent, there being a very good attendance of parents. They seemed to thoroughly enjoy the fun, and when one of the cubs suggested they should sing ■a song the parents did so with great gusto and. in good tune. Taka congratulates Miss D. Glensor, CM. of the island Bay pack, and her able assistants, on a well-disciplined pack, and was. very pleased to present a Second Star Cub with his star and several other Cubs with Service Stars. The St. Hilda's pack was represented by Miss Shirley Aldridge. A.C.M. Ngaio Cubs. The Ngaio Cubs have recently augmented their gear to the extent of several pounds. They, organised a bottle drive recently, and now enjoy the fruits of their efforts. They have purchased a large number of books and a fine "First Aid" kit, also several sets of signalling flags. The pack is to be congratulated on its enterprise. Puke Pa. Many happy times have been spent here, and the hills district is always pleased to grant the use of the whare to 6ther districts, but would be glad lif visitors would respect the utensils and replace all firewood, etc. Headquarters Notice, Scouters are reminded that the Rover Ball is to take place in the Mokoia Hall"tomorrow evening. As the Rovers have spared no effort to make this evening an outstanding success it is hoped that a large number will be present. Ist Roseneath Group. '. Cub Max Brown ot the Ist Roseneath | I pack recently took the step up to | Scouts, when his old friends oi the j pack baac him farewell and good hunting. His troop welcomed him, and then Scouts and Cubs stood silently in a circle while Miss D. Wright went through her Episee ceremony. Miss Wright is now assistant cubmaster, and we wish her the very best of happy comradeship. After the ceremonies the committee served a very enjoyable supper. First-class Tests. The next first-class tests will be held on Saturday; October 8. Entries must be at metropolitan headquarters by 5 p.m. 'on Friday, September 30. This is the time for Scouts to enter | for the tests if they want to obtain the badge before Christmas. I St. Anne's Group. St. Anne's Catholic Boy Scouts group celebrated its sixth birthday at St. Anne's Hall on Saturday, September 24. There was a good muster iof Scouts and Cubs, with the Rev. [ Father Walsh, chairman of the Scout Committee, presiding. The visitors included Mr. M. G. McCaul, District Commissioner, Miss c M. Gill, District Cubmaster, and Mr. B. Revell. Apologies were received from Yen. Archpriest Kelly, Messrs. D. Boyle, P. T. Smither, .and C. L. S. Green. D.S.M. | After the group had done justice to the good fare? provided by the committee and parents, the chairman cut the birthday cake, provided by Mrs. Fuller, a member of the committee, and decorated with Scouts, Cubs, and flags, and in doing so complimented the group on its success and thanked the members of the committee for the services they had rendered in making the party a success. The D.C., Mr. McCaul, gave the boys a little talk on "Brothers" and what scouting meant for every one of them. D.C.M. Miss Gill addressed a few remarks to the Cubs. S.M. "Rangi" Reid thanked the visitors for attending, and the committee, and called upon the secretary to address the boys. Mr. Cassie congratulated them on their birthday, particularly those who had begun as Cubs when the group was formed. He urged them to continue to try and improve the troop, to assist their S.M. and officers, and to make every endeavour to get other boys to join. He asked them all to look on him as more than a big brother, to come to him with their queries, or for advice, and he would assist them in every possible way, S.M. Rangi.. in thanking Mr. Cassie for his remarks, stated that many of the boys referred to the secretary by the familiar name of "Pop," and moved that the gathering christen Mr. Cassie "Pop." This was carried by acclamation. Mr. Cassie expressed thanks for the honour conferred.

Commissioner's Conference. The annual Dominion Commissioners' conference was held over the weekend at the Frederick Wallis House, Lower Hutt, -in wonderful weather. Much work was done, and many important decisions were arrived at for the future welfare of the movement in New Zealand. The happy and united spirit of brotherhood which prevailed throughout made all discussions not only effective in obtaining the widest possible expression of different viewpoints but also a pleasure and inspiration to everyone taking part. When the members relaxed on the Saturday evening for a brief camp-fire sing-song the merriest Cubs or Scouts could not have given them any points in happy carefree jollily. On Sunday morning a Scouts' Own was held, at which the Dominion Chief Commissioner, Mr. Christie, gave an inspiring talk on the theme, "We are fellow-workers with God." During the weekend the Dominion Commissioner for Training, Mr Cooksey (Littlejohn) gave very interesting and valuable talks on several matters, particularly on camping On Friday evening members of the jamboree organisation team, under the leader, Mr. J. E. F. Vogei, were present, and many questions were asked and answered. The site for the New Zealand jamboree to be held at the end of 1939 was visited by Commissioners on Sunday afternoon.
