LABOUR OPPOSED

MR. WILKINSON'S REASONS

"RASH LEGISLATION"

(By Tele.seraph—Press Association.)

ELTHAM, September .27.

Speaking to a large- audience in Kaponga last night, Mr. C. A. Wilkinson, Independent candidate for Egmont, gave reasons for his opposition to the Labour Government as follows:—

Because of the consistent and insistent urging that the State can and will do everything for everybody, especially the worker, which tends to destroy self-reliance and the mainspring of incentive without which there can be little or no progress.

Because these destructive doctrines will, if given effect to, promote national decay and result in a slackening of effort, to the detriment of the nation.

Because, under Labour, the great lessons and principles of economics are being submerged and we are being led into untried theoretical schemes which promise to be a millstone round the neck of the body politic for generations to come.

Because of the Government's unfair competition with private enterprise, specially in the transport field, and its heaping of punitive and destructive taxation on all forms. of business. enterprise. • . • • •->■■■■

Because of the reckless and unprecedented expenditure of both, taxation money and borrowings. '

Because of the rash legislation and Socialistic objectives for its social security plan, based on an unsound financial basis; its compulsory unionism; reckless finance; tremendous taxation levy; compulsory commandeer of farm produce; unwillingness to visualise between sound and unsound lousiness expansion (for instance railway finance, where increased business totalling • £952,000 was obtained at an- increased cost of £1,260,000).

Because of Labour's fostering of class consciousness and inability to understand that ' the success; of'our economic system involves co-opera-tion of labour, capital, and management; its support of the doctrine that restriction of hours of work and consequent lessened production contributes to prosperity; because of its bias in favour of organised labour, labour leaders, and labour practices, and its continual hostility towards business and business men.

Because of the compelling of practically all workers to become unionists, whether they like it or not, because when they are unionised they can ,then be compelled by the majority to" subscribe to the Labour Party's political funds and Labour newspapers against their consent. Finally Mr. Wilkinson declared that the Government was created by the people for the expression of the nation's power in the management of the country's business in the interest of all without favour or partiality. People were not created for the Government or to be exploited by the Government.
