SUMMER SEASON OPENS

The Waimarie Croquet Club, Lower Hutt opened its season on Saturday afternoon, with an ideal spring day to enhance the beauty of their grounds in Eiddiford Park and add enjoyment to the games. The greens were opened by the Mayor of Lower Hutt, Mr.- J.. W. Andrews, who was accompanied by Mrs. Andrews (patroness of the club), wearing a frock of navy matt crepe with floral redingote, and navy hat. Mr. Andrews said that the Borough Council was pleased to have the club as tenants of the greens' which were maintained in excellent order. In this connection he paid tribute to the work of Councillor J. Mitchell, chairman of the reserves committee. The clubroom, where tea was served, was artistically arranged, and decorated with lovely spring flowers in the prevailing tones of brown and gold (the club colours), velvety wallflowers, lachanalia, polyanthi, and poppies with delicate maidenhair fern making a delightful table decoration. Mrs. G. H. Savage, president, received the guests, -who included Mrs. John Mitchell (vice-patroness), Mrs. W. S. Austin (president of the Wellington Croquet Association), and members of the association's executive, Mesdames R. Gardiner, E. McKenzie, J. O'Donnell, W. E. Caldow, E. Boocock, and A. Ramsey, Mrs. W. N. Walker (president of the Woburn Club), Mrs. J. B. Wood (president, of the Hutt Club), Mrs. N. O'Shea, Mrs. A. Pollock, and Mrs. Hollard (a foundation member of.the Hutt Club and the oldest playing member in the Hutt Valley). Charming bouquets designed by Mrs. Vagg, were presented by Ruth Andrews to Mrs. Andrews, Mrs. Austin, Mrs. Mitchell, Mrs. Savage, and Mrs. Kelly (secretary). The winners of the opening-day competitions were as follows: —Angles, Mrs MacKenzie 1, Mrs. Sutton 2; squares, Mrs. McKenzie 1, Rev. Mr. Tye 2- clock, Mrs. J. Andrews 1, Miss Pole 2; ladder, Mrs. Mahoney 1, Mrs. Wood 2. "Bring and Buy." A most successful "Bring-and-buy" day was held last week by the St. James' Church Ladies' Guild in the schoolroom, Woburn Road, Lower Hutt. A continuous stream of buyers throughout the day kept the organisers busy. The well-stocked stalls included produce (Mesdames H. B. Gordon, J. R. Carter, and C. W. Clark), jams and preserves (Mesdames J. Bertinshaw and G. Holcomb), fancy and needlework (Mesdames G. L. Giesen, W. Toomath, Lee, and Miss R. Meek), cakes (Mesdames W. J. Mair, M. S. Martin, H. S. Mills, and J. O. Taylor), and miscellaneous (Mesdames L. Boyd, B. E. Griffiths, L. Rankine, and H. Hardy). A dainty afternoon tea was served from tables which were attractively decorated with spring blooms in sulphur and gold tints by Mesdames J. W. Mackisask, A. F. Tosswill, W. E. Morris, A. J. Doran, D. E. Middlemiss, and Misses Barbara Hills and B. Barker. A number of musical items were delightfully presented by Mesdames H. E. Leighton, Hubbard, and C. W. Clark, with Miss B. Humphries accompanying, and a charming puppet show, which held the attention of the many children.and adults alike, was staged by Mrs. O. S. Heymann, who with "Punch" was most cordially thanked at the conclusion of the show. An exceedingly satisfactory return resulted from the day and will go-to defray expenses in this wide and scattered parish. : Bowls and Tennis. . A perfect afternoon favoured the opening of the tennis section, of the Lower Hutt Bowling and Tennis Club on Saturday. The courts were officially declared open for play by the president, Mr. J. Fletcher, who wished the members good fortune and good weather throughout the season and the j first ball was served by Mrs. Fletcher. Three cheers were called for the president and his wife and the latter was presented with a bouquet of spring flowers. Mr. F. Stoupe, representing the Hutt Valley Lawn Tennis Subassociation, was present, and also a number of visitors from other clubs. In the evening a tennis dance was held in the Bowling Pavilion at which the trophies from the previous season were presented by Mr. Fletcher. These were as follows: —Championship games: Ladies' singles, Miss G. Hadwin; men's, O. Bold; men's doubles, Messrs. E. Ridyard and H. Stoupe; combined doubles, E. Ridyard and Miss G. Hadwin. Handicap games: Ladies' singles, Mrs. J. Strand; men's, G. Bold; ladies' doubles, Miss J. Rhodes and Mrs. J. Stevenson; men's, Messrs. C K. Pearson and A. J. Nicholls; combined, K. Wilson and Miss I. Davidson. Pearson Memorial trophies: Mrs. J. Stevenson and, Mr. R. Swain; most improved player, Miss G. Organ. The committee for the forthcoming season, who were also responsible for the arrangements of the dance, comprised Mr. R. Swain (club captain), Mr. H. Stoupe (secretary), Mrs. J. Stevenson, Miss G. Hadwin, Messrs. E. Ridyard and G. Hill.
