The meteorological situation is still dominated by an anticyclone which extends from Australia to beyond the Dominion. A very slight depression which crossed the South Island during the night has given cloud in Canterbury and Otago with some light rain in a few places, but otherwise the weather has been fine everywhere with light variable winds. An exceptionally high column of vapour was visible from Opotiki above White Island on Thursday morning, states an Opotiki correspondent. The narrow column was the highest seen for a long period and rose for several thousand feet straight above the island.
