HOCKY BENNELL

WELTER CHAMPION

AUSTRALIAN TITLE

Jack McNamee lost his" Australian welterweight boxing title in a 15----rounds contest at the Carlton Stadium recently, when he was. out-point-ed by the .former amateur champion, Hocky Bennell. (New Zealanders will recall that Bennell Was in New Zealand early in the season and scored an easy win on points over Barney Down. He was obviously a class or two above the New Zealand welters and he returned to Australia after a very brief stay.)

McNamee, an older and more experienced boxer, established , a lead in the early rounds mainly because of Bennell's cautiousness and a hesitancy on attack, stated the "Sydney Morning Herald," but as the rounds progressed Bennell gave a Vigorous display, and his punching was heavier.

In the seventh round McNamee was narrowly saved from a knockout and gained a respite when in difficulties by the contest being halted owing to Bennell's glove lace becoming undone. Although Bennell retrieved the points lost in earlier rounds McNamee joined in providing a slow battle, and the issue was in doubt until the closing rounds. Bennell's forcefulness and greater strength towards the end gave him the verdict by a small margin.
