SCOPE FOR WOMEN
VETERINARY CAREERS
A new edition of the pamphlet or veterinary surgery as a career, issued by the Minister oi Labour in England explains that the opportunities: f6l women are thought to be in the treatment of smaller animals rather than in a general country practice, where prejudices and certain difficulties are encountered, states the "Daily Telegraph." Plentiful scope should be found in a large town, or growing residential suburb, in a practice devoted to the treatment of domestic pets and canine surgery, though lucrative work may be found in relation to poultry diseases, The profession for women is still in the pioneer stages, and much depends on personality and ability to overcome prejudices, according to the pamphlet It is pointed out that the profession is unlikely to absorb any large number of women in addition to the consider: able number now training. In spite of the increased use oi mechanised transport, the prosperity of the profession as a whole has not declined, thought it may have been affected. Recent developments in legislation affecting animal health and for ensuring the purity of food supplies afford excellent prospects for the veterinary surgeon as a country practitioner, a research worker, and as an official inspector.
