WAR VETERANS' DANCE

One of the social gatherings, most looked forward to from year to year in the Hutt Valley is the annual dance given by the South African War Veterans wlnn these comrades of far-off days pom in entertaining their friends, wives, anJ daughters. The guest of honour was Colonel A. Mabin. Decorations and orders were worn. A spirit of happy comradeship and spontaneous enjoyment characterised the j gathering which numbering nearly 300, | filled the Taita Hall. Full-sized signal I flags, completely, covering the w.alls and a light canopy of blue and gold < streamers overhead made the hall a scene of brilliant colour against which the stage decoration of nikau palms with fronds nearly reaching the ceiling stood out in bold relief. At their foot and massed along the stage were stands of pink pearl magnolia. An excellent orchestra with the assistance of Mr. H. Kitchener, M.C.-, kept the floor filled until a late hour.-In the supper-room blue and. gold streamers traversed the white covered tables and vases of spring flowers in the same shades made a dainty decoration. A delicious supper of all kinds of piping hot savouries of every description, sweets, and coffee was provided by the ladies' committee, which comprised the convener, Mrs. F.-.-W. Kitfeherier (in scarlet embossed novelty crepe and taffeta coatee ~ to match), Mesdames J. Pescini..: (terra-cotta crinkle crepe), D. A. Jackson (midnight blue cloque) C. H. r ßitzema (navy georgette), J. Waldie (nile green lace), J. MacNeilly (clove pink: lace), Misses V.. Kitchener (floral 1 slipper satin), and Pescini < (pink' organdie). The executive committee^ consisted of Mr. F. Kitchener (chairman), and Messrs. J. Pescini (vice-chairman), C H. Ritzema (secretary), D. A. Jackson, J. W. Waldie, A. Goodman, H. Kitchener, A. Pescini, P. W. Wilson, and R. Tompkiris.
