"SPRING IS HERE"
ATHENJAN BLOSSOMS
Nothing seems to damp the ardou* of the Athenian Club for something different at each of its fortnightly partlei in the Assembly Hall, and Wednesday-si gathering, the last but one of the 193S season, safely maintained a deserved reputation. The theme selecfc?fr "Spring Is Here," seemed to otter little but a beaten track, but colour, beauty, novelty, and humour were blended in a long.programme which met the popular taste.: ~ , . . :■-■■.. The hall represented blossom tims in a poplar and willow-fringed oldworld garden, Shrubs mingW with flowers, magnolias, peach, cherry, and apple blooms, and the stage front was carpeted with poppies, narcissi, and primroses. The latticed arbour was smothered with mixed flowers in pink, red, yellow, and tangerine layers, creating a brilliant effect. Each lady attending was handed a parasol, and the menkind a freak goggle"\ mask. These assisted to create the atmosphef a associated with spring. Mr, A. T. Wes;t efficiently handled the arrangements for the committee, and Mr. H. Seaton assisted as controller otk the floor, the result being a smooth and happy function. The president, Mr. E. Loader^ thanked the committee for the fine club spirit displayed, and announced "the decision to finish the season with a fancy dress ball, "S.S. Athenian on World Tour." Mr. and Mrs. Southern Colledga gave exhibitions of the "Tango" and "Rhumba," and later introduced the English craze, "Lambeth Walk," to such purpose that soon, the whol« audience followed, suit.'
A "command" dancing- competition was won by Mr. and Mrs. H. Band (sword dance), Mr. Seaton and Miss Lane (Hula), and Mr. Si Colledge and Mrs. Loader (Fairy), being close seconds. Capital fun resulted from 'a , humorous presentation, "Athenian Gowns Unlimited," in "which eight "dainty" male mannequins displaying advanced fashions, paraded with ease and grace, earned the enthusiastic appreciation shown. The models, included: Messrs. H. Lane ("For the Street"), J. Barr Brown ("Morning"), H. Seatost ("Matron"), A. West , ("Winter Sport"), O. Ashton ("Summer Sport"), W. Band ("Boudoir"), W. Duncan ("Beach"),, and R. Walshaw ("The Bride"). The. wardrobe and properties showed ' much ingenuity and vision.
