"TRULY NATIONAL"
A GREAT PARTY
OPPONENTS OF SOCIALISM!
IMITED FRONT
"My party's claim to the description 'National' is'supported by fact," said Mr. Hamilton. "I am proud to stand today at the head of one of the greatest parties that has ever entered ~ the political arena in New Zealand. It has bound into one unit all sections of political thought opposed', to Socialism and State dictatorship. It .is truly national! It has business men, professional men, manufacturers, farmers, working" men and women from all walks of life in,,, its ranks. : They are still joining the' party in hundreds in a wave of enthusiasm and j patriotic fervour such* has rarely swept New Zealand. This Enthusiasm greatly resembles that.given to the National Government in England, when the Homeland was taken to the brink of the precipice by the impossibility of the Socialist theories of the then Labour Government. CLEAR AND SIMPLE MESSAGE. "In "that wave of enthusiasm you are playing your part; and to you, I wish to-make my message simple and clear. You will notice in this, as in the other matters I have mentioned, the Socialist makes the general statement that our promises and our statements are: not sincere. I can say to you all tonight that they are sincere. The claihi that the National Party, when it'becomes the Government^ will legislate for the community as a whole* irrespective of sectional interest, is absolutely sincere. We will not only-aim to bring about co-opera* tion between town and country, and between employer and employee, but we will/Insist on it. ' wln the issue today of British democracy against State Socialism, there arises the fundamental issue of race preservation which can only be based on family life. It has well been said the 'the family is the little nation.' Socialism seeks to replace the family by the State,( and, .in so doing, ignores a matter of basic loyalties. Family spirit and family loyalties have been of supreme importance in shaping the character of s the British race, and I say to you tonight that you all-know it is true that if family loyalties and family responsibilities are allowed to die—killed by State dictation—then the race will die. FUTURE OF YOUTH. "You know as well as I do that on the grounds of finance alone we can- .„ not afford to have a declining popula- , tioh. You know that this generation j ' has no right to mortgage the wealth and production of future generations j without first ensuring that the next generation will be numerically strong enough to carry the load. "One fact alone should convince you! It has been shown actuarially that, while the population from 16 to 60 will increase by 12 per cent., in the next thirty years it will increase by 94 per cent. That is why the National Party is sounding the clarion call throughout the Dominion for a realisation of these basic truths. If youth is to be asked to pay heavy taxes for the support-of the older, generation, the result must be delayed marriage and fewer children —another blow at the' home and the family. PRINCIPLES OF THE PIONEERS. "I believe that no propaganda, however cleverly camouflaged its exaggeration, can convince the New Zealander to depart so far from the principles of his forefathers as to accept Socialism. The country was founded by a people who came half-way round the world; who braved all the discomfort of travel and the dangers of colonisation of those days and who hewed their homes from the bush. They came so that they might win a stake in the. country—-own their own homes and faums and: provide for their future and that" of their children. From their efforts and the work of those after them, this country enjoys a standard of living second to notie in the world. It is a country that has been famous for its humanitarian legislation. You know and I know that the Labour Government is responsible neithsr for the standard of living nor for that leg"The'National Party will legislate
throughout on a basis of freedom, opportunity, and justice for the individual and for his family. As the leader of the Rational Party, I appeal to you all here—and to all those, young and old, listening' in .homes throughout New Zealand, to provide it with the opportunity of restoring . this nation's heritage." -■-:0;'...: \- "', [;^-\
