KARORI CLUB
There were some live subjects of discussion at the Karori Bowling Club's annual meeting on Thursday, and as a result the meeting, largely attended, lasted until about midnight. Mr. G. G. McFarlane (president) was in the chair until the reins of presidency were handed over to Mr. G. A. Hart.
The report and balance-sheet, items from which have been published in "The Post," were adopted on the motion of Mr. McFarlane, who took the opportunity of referring to the good work carried out by the: secretary, the treasurer, and the members of the committees. He claimed that in a year in which there had been important undertakings much good had been accomplished, and it was; hoped that the special attention given to the green would result in the area being in tip-top condition for play in the coming season. Mr. W. Gilbert, seconding the motion, said that the club had every reason to congratulate itsielf upon the results of the year's working as shown in the balance-sheet. The club was one of the best situated in the district.
A handsome cup presented by Mr,
A. J. Parsons for the singles championship was on view. The meeting passed a motion of thanks to Mr. Parsons, who explained that his gift was made in appreciation of the many kindnesses shown to him by fellowmembers and the friendships made during his seven years' association with the club. He hoped that he would be spared to spend many more years with the club.
Officers for the ensuing year were elected as follows: —President, Mr. G. A. Hart; vice-president, Mr. G. G. McFarlane; honorary secretary, Mr. C. Holden; honorary treasurer, Mr. W. Burrow; committee, Messrs. J. B. Jordan, F. J. Christensen, R. Wilkinson, W. H. Fisher, M. Gandar, W. Gilbert, W. K. Dallas, B. G. H. Burn, and A. S. Needham; honorary auditor, Mr. W. E. Shaw; delegate to Wellington Bowling Centre. Mr. W. Gilbert; selectors, Messrs. J. B. Jordan (midweek games) and A. S. Needham (Saturday games); publicity officer, Mr. J. Moffitt; club coach, Mr. A. S. Needham.
On the motion of Mr. Moffitt, the meeting approved the principle of a sole selector. In connection with the appointment for midweek games, Mr. Gandar asked whether there was a proposal before the centre for the abolition of the midweek competition. Mr. Gilbert said in reply that so far as he understood the proposal was discussed by one club but had not come before the centre.
Trophies won in club" competitions during the season were handed to the winners by Mr. McFarlane, the winners being:—Champion singles (cup presented by Mr. A. J.'Parsons) and champion badge, H. D. Field; champion pairs (badges), W. H. Thorn and H. D. Field (s); champion rinks (badges), G. G. McFarlane, A. Dempster, F. Platt and G. T. Crawford (s); junior singles (billiards cue), W. Morton; handicap singles (silver teapot), W. J. Goodall, Henderson Cup, S. Field, W. Fisher, R. Wilkinson, and W. H. Thorn (s). On behalf of the committee, Mr. Moffitt moved: "That the greenkeeper be employed for full time all the year round, and that the annual subscription be increased by five shillings to meet the extra expenditure." Mr. Gilbert seconded. In the course of much lively discussion, the need for fulltime employment on the green was questioned by some and advantages were claimed for it by others. There was a doubt in some minds as to whether the stipulated increase in subscription would meet the extra cost, but it was explained that much of last year's expenditure would be non-recur-ring, probably, according to the mover, an amount of about £100. Some members pointed to the possibility of other expenses occurring, and there were one ;or two who considered that the subscription should be raised by as much as £1 to meet the position. Eventually, the motion, on being put, was lost. The matter of colours and club blazer also gave rise to much discussion. The proposal for the standardisation of colours according to centres was not favoured.
