COUNTY BATS AGAIN

Continuing to trounce the county bowling, the Australian cricket team ran up a total of 590 for five wickets before declaring their innings closed against Leicestershire today. Badcock just failed to reach the double century, and Chipperfield was unbeaten with 104. In Leicestershire's second innings a complete rout was averted only by the batting of the former New Zealander Dempster, who had made 50 not out at stumps when the score was 107 for five wickets, the first Innings having realised 212. The weather was milder and more pleasant when the Australians, with 243 on the board for two wickets, resumed their innings, but it later became misty, smoke from an adjoining power station ( blowing across the ground and inconveniencing the batsmen, Badcock (111) and Hassett (88), whom the county could neither bowl out nor smoke out. BIG PARTNERSHIP. The partnership added 300 in 190 minutes, the highest of the tour. Badcock punished the short bowling and Hassett hit freely all round the wicket.

The latter was run out through carelessness, beginning to run too late for what was otherwise a comfortable single. Hassett hit eighteen 4's and one 6. He was sound, versatile, and forcible. Badcock was out in the last over before lunch, being splendidly caught low down by Dempster in the gully. Badcock was in for 290 minutes, and gave a solid and chanceless display, with frequent interludes of brilliance. He hit a 6 and twenty-six 4's. The score at lunch was 410 for four wickets, Chipperfield 18 not out. Chipperfield and Waite carried on brightly after lunch until Waite was caught in the slips. Five hundred came up after 360 minutes. Chipperfield reached his century in 145 minutes. He hit thirteen 4's, but gave chances at 28 and 76. Barnett played rather a scratchy innings. adjournment, after the innings had produced 590 for five wickets in 415 minutes. MORE NO-BALLS. McCormick opened the attack in Leicestershire's second innings, and was twice no-balled in his second over, raising his total of no-balls for the tour to 51. Prentice and Berry opened confidently, but when the total was 30 Berry was brilliantly caught at point, and Armstrong was out first ball. Dempster walked right into the next ball and was struck on the arm. He seemed to be unable to use his feet. He took strike to the following ball well in front of the normal crease. McCormick struck Prentice under the right armpit in his next over, the batsman remaining stockstill at his crease and not attempting to make a stroke. McCormick was taken off after six overs. O'Reilly had Prentice caught in his leg trap, and then had Dempster on edge, though the New Zealander dealt firmly with anything loose. McCormick returned at 92 with a fast over, one delivery flying over Dempster's head. He was twice no-balled in his eighth over. Dempster hooked one to the fence and reached 50 in 85 minutes.
