POLITICAL INTEREST
THE PEOPLE AWAKE
RALLYING TO NATIONAL
BANNER
Colonel C. H. Weston, K.C., president of the National Party, presided and introduced Mr. Hamilton. He said that he did not think Mr. Savage would blush when they gave him credit for the unusual interest that was being displayed in politics. It was the Government's Socialist and Communistic policy that caused such an interest. (Applause.) It was its policy that had caused the birth of the National Party. It had caused to unite under one banner all those elements that were antiSocialist and anti-Communistic. (Applause.) "When we hear that Mr. Savage has stated that he is bound by no traditional methods we know where we are," Colonel Weston continued. Voices: So do we! Colonel Weston: That explains why the membership of the National Party is increasing by thousands. (Applause.) —A voice: Don't make it too hot!—and why men and women who have studiously avoided politics in the past are now lending s. hand to save New Zealand from chaos. (Applause.) A voice: Tommy rot!
Colonel Weston said that under Mr; | Hamilton's leadership they had achieved a unity that had been unknown in any party on their side of the fence before. "We are quite content to follow his lead," he said. "Those are the tests of leadership. His good judgment and common sense have found the solution for all our problems." A voice: Bring on the umbrella! Colonel Weston: His training and experience have fitted him well for the position he now holds. Some of his political detractors—he has no enemies —say he is dour, but we see him as a very lovable character and great patriot. (Applause.) Colonel Weston said that he wanted to tell them something in confidence — in the next Parliament Mr. Hamilton was going to have a very comfortable majority. (Applause.)
Voices: Bedtime story! . . . What did you tell us: last election? . . . Back to the soup kitchens!
