SUPPLIES BY AIR

BAFFIN BOMBERS

USED

FOOD AND LAND LINES

Some idea of the complete disruption of all means of communication is given by the fact that only by air could connection be made with the Te Haroto and Te Pohue districts, on the way to Taupo, and Tutira, on the Wairoa road. The air distribution of food and first necessities to farmers in these localities and in certain other areas cut off as a result of the destruction of bridges and roads is in charge of Squadron-Leader S. Burrell, of Wellington, the machines used being Blackburn Baffin bombers.

Some farmers who were in the first emergency entirely dependent upon supplies from the air have now established communication by pack-horse, and the Air Force machines are able to devote more time to the carrying of land-line cable, which is dropped at intervals along the line and is far more rapidly strung across country than could be done had it to be transported by pack-horse or man-power.
