GREAT DISASTER
HAWKE'S BAY FLOODS
DAMAGE TO PUBLIC WORKS
ESTIMATE OF £300,000
Speaking at Lyall Bay last night, the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple) said the floods on the East Coast constituted one of the worst disasters in the history of New Zealand. Damage to public works was estimated at £300,000 and damage to farms could not yet be estimated. In some cases farms were six feet deep in silt and would require at least two years to come back to production. Communication between Napier and Wairoa had been cut off and would not be properly restored for six months. During the last thirty-six hours he had arranged for transport along the coast and by air. Such transport might be expensive, but where human life was at stake cost should not be considered and his Department had done all possible to see that everyone in the stricken area was placed in a position of safety.
