CODS OF THE SEA
♦ •„-■-■ 1 I saw the sea gods climb the | shaft of sun that poured, from cloud to sea after the sudden, fierce, unmitigated rain. Up from the sea they rose, and the waves rose to smooth their flowing robes, melting: awl liquid, pearled with a shell's dream. Almost they drew the sea—the waters foamed, andVa great circle sucked the deepest 'tides, building a pyramid of ' moving green. But with a sudden leap, the gods seized the bright ropes of light, leaped upward—and released the sea! Hand over hand they climbed the golden shafts, and the sea claimed as its own the jewelled robes that fell like weary birds slowly along the winds, to rest at last upon the waters and the moving tides. —S.
