REHEARING OF SHIPWRIGHTS' DISPUTE

A rehearing of the New Zealand Shipwrights and Boatbuilders' dispute was commenced in the Arbitration Court yesterday before Mr. Justice Hunter and Messrs. V. Duff and A. W. Croskery.

Mr. F. P. Walsh appeared for the workers' union, and Mr. G. H. Norman for the employers.

The rehearing is necessary through the change of the employers' assessor on the Court.

The points in dispute are hours of work, wages, overtime, travelling time, rates for shipwrights at sea, and rates payable on excursions.

The union is asking for a 40-hour week, and the employers are seeking a 44-hour week. The union is seeking a rate of 3s an hour, which is ljd above the highest skilled rate awarded by the Court. The extra ljd is claimed as an allowance for tools.
