PATIENTS' FEES
TWO POINTS OF VIEW
The much-improved position in regard to the collection of fees was commented upon by Mr. A. H. Carman at last night's meeting of the Wellington Hospital Board. He remarked that in some departments the receipts were double what they had been during the previous twelve months, despite the substantial reductions in fees made by, the present board, and he contended, that the position was clear evidence that when fees were reduced to a reasonable level people were only too willing to pay. "I think these are figures of which the board can justly be proud," added Mr. Carman.
Mr. C. A. L. Ti'eadwell said that he refused to allow the suggestion to pass that previous boards had, directly or indirectly, been harsh in their attitude towards people passing through the hospital. Every member of the board knew that the reason for patients' present ability to pay their fees was that the national income of the Dominion was higher than ever before. It was not & question of the policy of the present board.
