MOTOR RACING

AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX

South Australia and Victoria have road circuits upon which speeds of 100 miles an hour have been attained and 80 miles an hour averaged. New South Wales has now come into line with a modern four miles circuit situated about two miles from Bathurst. The course is ostensibly a tourist road over Mount Panorama, and cost about £28.000 to construct, but it lends itself admirably to safe and spectacular motor racing. It is said by those who have inspected the circuit that it. provides one of the finest courses of its kind, and it is predicted that Bathurst will annually see some of

the finest motor racing in the Commonwealth, as the road embraces corners, long straights, and one fairly stiff gradient. The road is 30ft wide with a tarred surface. Where necessary, escape roads have been constructed, so that drivers, in the event of getting into difficulties when cornering at high speeds can find safety. The inaugural event to be decided on the circuit is the Australian Grand Prix of 1938, the race being staged under the auspices of the New South Wales (Light Car Club. It will be decided on handicap lines on Easter Monday, over 37 laps, approximately 150 miles. The prize list totals £600, the most attractive yet offered for a motor event in the Commonwealth. The race will be Australasian in character, with two crack English drivers adding further interest. There are 38 entries, as follows:— New South Wales.—N. F. Aubin, driver G. R. Reed (Ford V 8 special); G. Bonser (Terraplane special); P. B. Burton (S/C Alvis); L. Burrows (Terraplane); "H. Bartlett (S/CM.G. "Q' type); J. F. Crouch (M.G. "T" series); F. A. Crago (M.G.
