A SURPRISE RESULT

(Received April 8, 9.30 a.m.)

LONDON, April 7.

The Australian Associated Press says that the result of the poll in West Fulham, the first by-election since Mr. Anthony Eden's resignation and the Austrian coup, came as a surprise to supporters of the Government, who expected they would retain the seat with a reduced majority. However, Ministerialists consider the Labour majority was too small to constitute a rebuff to the Prime Minister's policy. The "Daily Herald," however, in a leader, claims that this crushing reply to Mr. Chamberlain is the forerunner of a movement to drive the Government from office.
