TORRENTIAL RAIN
SLIPS ON WEST COAST
BUSES NEARLY CAUGHT
(By* Telegraph—Press Association.)
GREYMOUTH, April 7,
Torrential rain this afternoon caused several slips on the Greymouth-West-port coastal road near Mabelle Bay in the Brighton district. Two of Gibbs's passenger service busls travelling to Greymouth were.delayed at Mabelle Bay, but later continued to the top of Gentle Annie Hill, where a second slip halted them. Then, after they-had stopped, ' the hillside only 30 yards behind the buses was seen to collapse upon the road, blocking it completely. A mass of boulders, earth, and trees covered the road to the height of a house for a distance of a chain. A pedestrian, Mr. Andrew McNee, who Was just behind the buses, had to dash for safety.
The downpour caused floods in the Porari and Punakaiki Rivers and also damaged the road in several places, but it is expected that the main slip will be cleared tomorrow morning Passengers for IWestport this evening had lo walk over the slip.
