PRIVATE CARS V. BUSES
The effect on bus services of the private car in which the owner drove his friends to and from work was referred to by several witnesses during the hearing in the second Court of Arbitration of the Dominion passenger transport drivers' dispute. It was stated by officers controlling suburban bus services that the number of passengers carried by the buses had been greatly curtailed by the operation of private cars, the passengers of which contributed towards the "petrolmoney." This was especially the case in•' cities where large factories and workshops existed in a suburb ten or so* miles away. A man bought a second-hand car and undertook to drive his workmates to and from work if they helped pay running expenses. The result could easily be noted at peak periods. Such a practice, though contravening the regulations, was particularly difficult to catch, and its prevention was practically impossible.
