MAGISTRATE'S COURT
"In his own interests I will put him clear of methylated spirits for three months," said Mr. J. G. L. Hewitt, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court today, when sentencing William Vernon Hammond, a labourer and motordriver, aged 38, to a term of imprisonment of that duration. Hammond was charged with being found on enclosed premises in Ellice Street without lawful excuse. Sub-Inspector D. A. McLean, who prosecuted, said that when arrested Hammond smelt strongly of methylated spirits. John Robert Stringer, a labourer, aged 60, was deemed to be a rogue and vagabond in that he had insufficient lawful means of support, having been previously convicted of being idle and disorderly. He was /sentenced to one year's imprisonment in the Wanganui Prison. For attempting to board a moving train, Alexander Peters, a labourer, aged 43, was fined £3, in default 14 days' imprisonment, and for a first statutory offence of drunkenness he was fined £1, in default 48 hours' imprisonment.
