WEEKEND WEATHER

Special forecast for Wellington:—

North-westerly winds strong: to gale force, backing s to south within 24 hours.

Weather unsettled and squally, with further rain and possibly hail at times. Temperatures mild but becoming cold.

The forecast issued for the Dominion as xa whole by the Meteorological Office at noon today is for moderate to strong north to north-west winds, reaching gale force in places, but a change to southerlies setting in, starting in the south and becoming general within 24 to 36 hours. Weather Unsettled with general rain probable, with some heavy falls, with snow on the ranges in southern districts, and some thunder and hail in places. Temperatures becoming much colder. While pressure has continued to be rather high over and east of the North Island, a vigorous depression which has been operating in the Tasman Sea has advanced on the South Island. Winds have blown mainly from the north-west and have been strong and' of gale force at times about Cook and Foveaux Straits, but otherwise mostly moderate in force. Rain has fallen in Westland and in part of the Wellington Province, but elsewhere the weather has been mainly fair and temperatures have been mild till last evening, but this morning conditions had become more cloudy generally.

At Auckland yesterday it was overcast in the morning, but fine and sunny during the afternoon. Winds were light and variable. At 9 a.m. today a northerly wind was blowing with, an overcast sky.

Wellington had for the most part cloudy conditions with a squally northwest wind, the latter reaching gale force at times in the evening and in the early morning. Rain fell during the night, the total being 15 points. The sunshine yesterday was 4.4 hours.

At Christchurch the day was mild and sunny with moderate to fresh north-east winds. This morning it was calm and overcast.

Dunedin also had a fine sunny day with a light north-east breeze. At 9 a.m. today it was cloudy with a light northerly prevailing.
