»(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
AUCKLAND, September 10,
"As a result of my'travels I am more convinced than ever; that diet is th*. main factor in the preparation of dental .diseases," said Mr. T. A. Hunter, who retired in 1930' from the position of Director of Dental Hygiene,- Wellington, and who returned. to the Dominion by the Akaroa after representing the New Zealand Government at the International Dental Congress at Vienna and the New Zealand Dental Association at a meeting of the. Empire Dental Associations in London Mr. Hunter has been abroad for-nearly 18 months.
Mr Hunter said that in the cours* of his wide travels he had the opportunity of examining the dental condition of children in different countries, particularly in Europe. 'His contention was illustrated by! the-case of Portugal, where, he said, -the people were very poor and could not afford refined and concentrated foods such as white flour products and sweets. Their general diet was coarse rye .'-■ bread, dried fish cooked in oil, vegetables which every cottager grew at his door, and citrus fruits, which were cheap. Mr. Hunter added that milk was scarce. yet the children- had beautiful teeth.
