JAPANESE STRENGTH

MORE DIVISIONS IN SHANGHAI

SHANGHAI, September 8. After Chinese counter-attacks throughout the night on all ironts the Japanese this morning resumed their heavy bombardment from fleet and shore batteries. The Japanese, while claiming that the offensive is progressing satisfactorily, admit the evacuation of Yuehpu, five miles from Paoshan, in order to release troops to resist' the Chinese pressure on Paoshan. A fierce encounter is in progress be-r tween Jukong and Kiangwan, which was badly damaged by Japanese shells. The Japanese report that 10 additional Chinese divisions have been thrown in between Shanghai and Soochow, mak ving their present strength 350,000. • TJie Japanese Spokesman commented that the Chinese lack heavy artillery, but admitted that they are pretty good shots and much improved since 1932. A number of British women have returned unexpectedly from Hong Kong, declaring that they much prefer to be blown out of their homes in Shanghai than endure the discomforts of exile there. The Japanese from the university sector have linked up with their compatriots at Woosung. Sharp fighting continues at Machang, 35 miles from Peking.
