The Minister of Public Works (tbe Hon, R. Semple) is making a good recovery from- his indisposition, and expects to be about again within a tew days. , The retirement of Commander C. H. Kersley, commanding officer ot the Canterbury Division, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, will -take place next month. Commander. Kersley waa one of the original officers of the Canterbury Division, which was formed in April, 1928. He went to sea at an early age and served his first five years on sailing ships, in which he gained an invaluable training. During the Great War he served in the South-ampton-Havre destroyer escort patrol, the Nore patrol, and the famous JDover patrol. Whilst serving on the destroyer Ghurka of the Dover patrol be went through numerous destroyer and lightcruiser engagements off the Belgian coast. He is the only officer survivor of the Ghurka, as she was sunk by a mine a few hours after he had left her for hospital. He was later appointed to H.M.S. Ramilles, as a new ship, and he served In her on the navigation staff until, the end of the war. Cabled Information has been received that Mr, Alvin W. de Berry, 8.D.5., a graduate of Otago University, and the holder of a Dental' Scholarship at North Western University, Chicago. U,S,A„ has graduated Doctor ot Dental Surgery. Dr. de Berry pursued a postgraduate course and during hif residence in America produced ,» thesis upon "The relationship between dental carries and diabetes." He will return to New Zealand next month.
