HEARTENING VIEW

PROBLEMS IN EDUCATION

(Special to the "Evening Host.")

PALMERSTON N, This Day,

"That you" feel your isolation more than you need is one fact that has impressed: me in the few days that I have been in New Zealand," stated Dr. I. L. Kandel, Professor of Education in the International Institute at Columbia University, New York, when addressing a meeting of educationists in Palmerston North.

"There is also a danger of too much self-criticism," he added. "My field is comparative education, and my objective to ascertain trends. I can assure you honestly that in the few hours I have been in your district visiting Massey College and the Feilding Agricultural High School, I have found new ideas as valuable as any I have seen in my wanderings." Dr. Kandel added that New Zealand had no reason to be discouraged. Problems were similar in any part of the world; there was no problem to which there would not be found an analogy and most of the problems had arisen from pretty much the same forces. Education was passing through a period of transition and there would be an opportunity for orientation in the large number of lectures to be given in the four centres by noted authorities who would raise the issues during the New Education Fellowship Conference. This did not mean that a solution had been found, but all must stretch their minds to find enlightenment and apply their thinking. A solution would depend on the spirit of approach. ,
