AMERICAN STRIKES
EXPLOSION OF BOMB
STEELWORKS TENSION
INCREASES
(Received June 17, 9.30 a.m.)
j NEW YORK, June IG. A report from Johnstown, Pennsylvania, states that a bomb exploded at the gate o£ the Bethlehem steel plant while pickets were assembling to resist a march of men attempting to return to work, which the Mayor, Mr. Shields, had promised to lead after arming hundreds of vigilants with pistols and clubs. The bomb caused no damage and no injuries, but the incident has increased the tension which is hanging over the city.
Each faction is charging the other as being responsible. At Kansas City the police, using tear gas, ejected rioting strikers from five hotels after the windows had been smashed during a battle between strikers and non-strikers, in which bricks and stones were thrown. There were no injuries. A policeman fired a single shot without hitting anyone.
