SAVED THE SIDE

LOWRY AND WEIR

VALUABLE PARTNERSHIP

SECOND LANCS. MATCH

(From the Special Correspondent of

the United Press Association.)

(Received June 17, 10.30 a.m.)

PRESTON, June 1(5.

The New Zealanders batted first in - the cricket match against Lancashire, which commenced at Preston today, and made 220 (Lowry 49, Weir 40). Lancashire had scored 66 for one ~ wicket at stumps. The weather was fine and the wicket in good order. The public showed great interest in the , visit of the team, and there was a . crowd of about 4000. g The teams are:— 2 New Zealand.—T. C. Lowry (cap- „ tain), H. G. Vivian, W. A. Hadlee, J. " L. Kerr, M. P. Donnelly, D. A. K. Mol- : oney, W. N. Carson, G. L. Weir, J. K. )' Lamason, J. A. Dunning, and J. Cowie. t Lancashire.—W. H. L. Lister (capi tain), E. Paynter, J. L. Hopwood. J. Iddon, F. Watson,.N. Oldfield, W. E. Phillipson, A. Nutter; F. M. Sibbles, G. . Duckworth, and Rhodes. Weir and Lowry again saved the tourists from total collapse by a part- . nership of 75 runs for the seventh . wicket in 95 minutes. The wicket and > outfield were so somnolent that runs : were decidedly difficult to obtain. Vivian and Hadlee made a service- > able opening arid Kerr shaped pro- • misingly. Donnelly appeared to be set when he attempted a short single • and was run out. '■ SAVIOURS' OF THE SIDE. Six wickets were down for 122 runs when the saviours of the side against Worcestershire again came to the rescue of New Zealand. Lowry, who captained the side in the absence of Page, played a very sound innings of 95 minutes without making a mistake. Weir stayed for two hours in a determined and invaluable stand. The partnership was broken just before the advent of the new ball and the last three wickets fell comparatively cheaply. New Zealand enjoyed an early success when the county batted, but Paynter and Iddon, as in the first game at Manchester, faced the bowling with complete confidence, scoring freely. The slow bowlers were quickly brought on after the new-ball bowlers, but the wicket was too slow to assist spin bowling. Details:— NEW ZEALAND. First Innings.
