GRIM IRONY

TWEEDLEDUM BECOMES TWEEDLEDEE

BASQUES BLAMED

FIERCE FIGHTING AT BILBAO

(Received June 17, 11 a.m.)

HENDAYE, June 16.

Tweedledum has become Tweedlcdee, according to the latest insurgent official announcement, which with grim irony labels supporters of the Government as "rebels" and declares that the Basques will be responsible if the war is carried to the centre of Bilbao, as General Franco brings only peace. He has no rancour against those misguided enough to rebel against him, it is slated.

The official statement goes on to accuse the Basques of all the destruction and atrocities of the past few weeks, and adds that they have been terrorised by their foreign leaders, while only 100 per cent. Spaniards are fighting on behalf of General Franco. The insurgents admit Ihat the Basques are contesting every inch of advance.

Terrific fighting continues on the outskirts of Bilbao, and the hills are reported to be covered wi^h dead.
