PEOPLE WITH SMALL
INCOMES
(To the Editor.)
Sh- —The Labour Government's legislation has caused a great increase in he cost of living. Ministers have taken a good deal, of trouble to prove that increased wages more than compensate for this rise but never attempted to explain how those with small fixed incomes fare or how they are to meet the increased costs. Employers are compelled to pay award rates of wages which are based on a reasonable standard of living. Why then should people with fixed incomes very much below the award have to pay levy and emergency unemployment charge, or is it a case of government of the people by a parly for a party? When on a recent visit to this country the Hon. A. G. Ogilvie stated, "In common with other Statej Tasmania imposed a wages tax but last year the tax was abolished in so far as it related to all wages below the level of the basic wage, which was £3 9s 2d. Is it not time New Zealand followed Tasmania's lead?—l am, etc.,
