DULL WEATHER
COLDER AND MORE RAIN
Special forecast for Wellington:—
Moderate to strong south-easterly winds. Weather cold and unsettled, and occasional rain still probable.
The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued at noon today for the ensuing 24 hours, is for light to moderate westerly winds to the north of Kawhia and Tauranga, but these will back later to the southwest and freshen somewhat. Northerlies will prevail at first between Hawke's Bay and East Cape, but winds otherwise will be south-easterly to southerly in direction. They will be moderate to strong generally, and will rise to gale force at times in the Cook Strait area. The weather will still be unsettled, with rain at times in most districts,- and with snow on the ranges. Temperatures will be colder.
An extensive and complex depression has been operating over the New Zealand area, and dull and misty weather with rain at times has been experienced in most districts. There have been a few heavy downpours and snow has fallen on the South Island ranges. Winds have been strong at times in the central districts, but elsevhere they have been mainly light to moderate in force. North-westerly to westerly breezes have prevailed in the northern portion of the North Island, while elsewhere yesterday's winds were somewhat variable in direction. By this morning, however, winds were more generally southerly in direction.
Auckland had fair to fine weather yesterday. There was but little wind in the morning and a westerly breeze in the afternoon. Showers totalling three points of rain fell there last night, and the weather this morning was cloudy with a light breeze from the north-north-west.
Wellington's weather continued to be dull and unsettled with occasional rain. A wind from the south-east has been mainly light in force, but early this morning it freshened somewhat. The rainfall up to 9 a.m. today totalled 1R points.
In Christchurch it has been cold and dull, continuous light rain, totalling 26 points, falling all day yesterday and until early this , morning. A moderate wind between south-east and north-east prevailed, but at 9 a.m. today a west-south-west breeze was blowing, the weather still being dull and misty.
Dunedin had a cold north-easterly breeze yesterday. The weather was dull and misty, and showers totalling 43 points of rain fell during the afternoon and night. The weather this morning, however, was fine and clear, with a gentle south-westerly breeze.
