HIGH POWER TELEVISION

The announcement in France that Paris will have the most powerful television station in the world on the air by July has stirred speculation in American radio circles whether or not this move augured an international television race comparable to the one now being run in super-power broadcasting.

The new French transmitter is to have 30,000 watts and the aerial will be on top of the Eiffel Tower, 1100 feet above the street. The apparatus is the result of several years of research in the laboratories of Le Materiel Telephonique in Paris, subsidiary of the International Telephone and Telegraph Corporation.

Unless the power of the image transmitter on the Empire State Building is increased above the present 7500 watts, the United States will be second in power output in television. Recent television demonstrations in Philadelphia utilised a 4000-watt transmitter.

The British Broadcasting Corporation's television station at Alexandra Palace is rated at 5000 watts.

Ultra-short waves are used in all cases, with the reliable service area limited from 25 to 50 miles.
