CHANCE IN THE CAME
It was just as well that he had built tip this useful lead, because from this point onwards the character of the game completely changed. Crawlev's long game improved, while Fennmk began to be a little uncertain in ■the direction of his drives. He lost the eighth through hooking into a ditch among the rushes, was robbed of the ninth by a stymie, and for a while was only enabled to hang on to his lead by the unshakeable steadiness of-his short game. He was three up again at the fifteenth, but Crawley chipped dead to win the sixteenth in 4, and for the first time Pennink faltered. He was bunkered at the short seventeenth, and a drive half-topped should have lost him the eighteenth also. But here Crawley, who had regularly been reaching this green in two iron shots, missed, his second and was lucky in the .end-to get a half in 5/ It was -the same tale, to tell in the' afternoon.' ■ •; • . The match looked like'being squared when-Pennink was .wide, of the-first green'with his' opening shot, but he played a beautiful chip and sank a bold putt, and his opponent missed a" short, one. He was a little lucky that some wayward drives did not find punishment later on, but with three 3's'and six 4"s for the outward journey he quickly increased his lead to 4 up at. the fourth and s.up at the turn. Another fine 'putt' finished off the match". at the 'thir.teeoth. His win by ■ 6 and 5 hardly does credit to. th^ superiority of his golf, which; was superb in every department, except, as I hav,e already indicated, for a tendency to hook his drives. He grips the club with the right hand noticeably behind the shaft and the left [on, top and endeavours to correct the tendency1 to hook by adopting.a stance which for1 these days is unusually; "open. But the^ balance of this combination evidently proves a little difficult to maintain.
