FAST SCORING
42 IN ONE GAME
MT. COOK O.G.'S RECORD
Another round of the Wellington Basketball Association's, competitions was played on Saturday. Mount Cook Old Girls, in the fifth junior grade, scored a record number of goals—42 —more than one goal a minute. Wellington East in the senior A grade also scored heavily, defeating Dental Clinic by 32 goals to 10. Clinic's forward third played well when it had the chance, but East's centre and defence thirds were much stronger than Clinic's and East were on the attack throughout the game. .At the commencement, Clinic were one short, and played only two in the defence third,, which permitted East forwards . to pass in easily to the goal. Accurate shooting gave East a big lead in the second half, and Clinic found it impossible to intercept the quick passes. Kia Ora ' defeated Awatea by - 20 goals to 14, in a fast game, closer than the score indicates. With Kia Ora leading by 10 goals to 6, Awatea started the second half with some brisk passing, finishing off by accurate shooting by V. King to. even the score at 11-all. From 13-all Xia1 Ora gradually drew ahead to win by 6 goals.
The match between University and Wesley was hard fought, with University just a little stronger throughout, the score standing at 22-17 in their favour at close of play. Technical put up a strong game against Training College, and did well to score 13 goals to Training College's 19 while playing one short; H. Jacobsen and M. Nihill put in some remarkably active work in the second half, and scored well. ' . THIRD GRADE. The match between Kia Ora and Empire Box for the first place in section 1 of the third grade was very closely contested, one goal separating the teams at half time and the game ending in a 14-14 draw. Both teams were keyed up for the game, and as a result, penalties were frequent. Empire Box now lead in the section by three points, Kia Ora having drawn a previous game, and having to complete the game against Y.W.C.A. An important game in section 2 was that in which St. Patrick's, beat Aspro by 17 goals. to 16. Throughout the game the score see-sawed and right up till the call of time, the result was in doubt. This makes Brymay and Aspro equal for first place with 16 points each, St.'Patrick's and. Olympic coming next equal, with 12 points. WELLINGTON EXECUTIVE. Mrs<^A. Symonds presided at the fortnightly meeting of the executive of the Wellington Basketball Association on Monday night.
The Canterbury Association advised that August 14 was suitable for thqm to play the.annual,fixture-With.-Wel-lington B. ■■ - The Furlor Club was granted permission- to invite -'Wanganuitd' play'a, Furlor team in Wellington/; the date to be held over until a reply'is received from Wanganui. Several reports on injuries were received, and it was decided to remind clubs that if an accident is' not reported to the association withjn seven days of its occurrence, a player is not entitled to any assistance. 1 It was decided to.pay Only'a portion of the account for G.. Davy's medical attention, as all conditions had not been strictly complied with. ,■ The announcement of all representative teams was held over until June 23, when it will be made,at the dance arranged for the purpose. • t : The response by the teams: in the elimination 'contest for the right to nominate a queen for the carnival was very poor, and as Wellington East topped all four grades received, it was decided to ask the club if it desired to nominate queens. The treasurer reported that the trophy won by the senior B team at Kotorua last year had arrived. It was unanimously decided to send
a second senior A team to defend the 1 trophy at the tournament in August or September, providing that suitable arrangements can be made with the Hotorua Association.
A letter was received from E. Wahren (Rovers) notifying that she was unable to continue, playing. this year. The senior A selectors reported that J. Grainger was not available for selection this season. . ■ Coaches for the representative teams were appointed as follows: —Senior A, Mrs. A. Symonds; senior B, Miss L. Sturrock; third grade, Mrs. G. Calder. It was decided that each grade be responsible for raising its own representative team's expenses, and that all teams be asked to forward as soon as possible any money raised for the fund. TRAVELLING FUND. Some of the teams.have arranged various functions in aid of the travelling fund, and it is hoped that every team, from senior to fifth grade, will do at least a little towards raising the amount required. The management committee has arranged a dance at the Assembly Hall, for Wednesday, June 23, at which all;.representative teams will be announced, and it is hoped that all' players will give their support. CLAIMS FORFEITED. Several players are bemoaning the fact that insuflcient attention was given to the. rules governing the granting of medical assistance. The main trouble has been the neglect to write in to the association notifying the accident within seven days of its occurrence. It would be well worth while for all players to find out for themselves exactly what are the conditions under which medical assistance can be obtained, as many club secretaries omit to pass on the information. HUTT VALLEY ASSOCIATION.
At last the Hutt Valley Association has completed ; its constitution, made necessary through its formation as a separate association in 1935. If has decided that only representative ers may wear the' representative blazer. This' year, besides1 sending"a team to the New Zealand tournament in Auckland, it hopes to arrange a .fixture for the B team against Manawatu. Mesdames Baldwin and Keid have been appointed selectors for the B team, and Mesdames Cleland arid Baldwin have been appointed publicity officers. Mesdames Cole and Cleland and Miss Cooke have been appointed trustees. The Hutt Valley Referees' Association is going ahead, and several of its members intend to sit for the New Zealand theoretical examination which is to be held next Tuesday, with Mrs. Cole as supervisor.
