TANNERS' DISPUTE
The Dominion tanners' dispute was heard in conciliation council yesterday, the Commissioner (Mr. M. J. Reardon) presiding. The applicants were the New Zealand Tanners' Industrial Association of Employers, and the respondents the Auckland Curriers and Beamsmen's Industrial Union of Workers and others.
The assessors for the applicants were Messrs. S. G. Bouron (Christchurch), S. L. Wright (Christchurch), H. L. Longbottom (Dunedin), T. Tompkins (Dunedin), J. E. Astley (Auckland), A. E. Lawry (Auckland), and the advocate was Mr. T. O. Bishop (Wellington). The assessors for the respondents were Messrs. H. J. Neeson (Auckland). N. G. Harlick (Onehunga), H. Glengarry (Dunedin), J. A. Millburn (Dunedin), F. C. Wadman (Christchurch), C. L. Burnand (Sydenham), and H. G. Kilpatrick (Christchurch). The agent was Mr. W. E. Sill (Trades Hall, Auckland).
The applicants sought a 44-hour week between 7 a.m. and 5.30 p.m. on five days of the week, and between 7 a.m. and noon on Saturdays, three shifts to be worked where work was continuous for more than eighteen hours, with Id extra per hour for shift workers required to work between 5.30 p.m. and 7 a.m. for all hours worked at ordinary rates within that period of time. The wages offered were from 2s Id per hour for curriers to Is lOd for splitters' assistants. The respondents' counter-proposals were for a 40-hour week, and wages from 2s lOd per hour to 2s 7d per hour.
