HOCKEY MATCH
WELLINGTON TEAM BEATEN
(From "The Post's" Special Reporters.)
PALMERSTON N., This Day.
| The main ring attraction at the | National Dairy Show at Palmerston North yesterday was a representative hockey match between Wellington and Manawatu. The heavy rain during the day made the ground very heavy, and while the standard of hockey was not as high as was to be expected, there were patches of good play. Manawatu, being used to the ground, had the advantage generally and won by 2 goals to 1. The teams were:— Manawatu.—la. Hart (goal), K. Drinkwater (left full-back), W. Sutton (right full-back), I. Davey (left-half), S. Radcliffc (centre-half), W. Burne (right-half), D. O'Brien (left-wing), C. Ward (inside-left), J. Morgan (centreforward), A. Petcn (inside-right), P. Loft (right-wing). Wellington.—C. Moore (goal), 1. Nimmo (left full-back), O. Perrin (right full-back), Harrison (left-half), G. Rowe (centre-half), Goldstone (right-half), K. Kelly (left-wing), Neate (inside-left), M. Dentice (centreforward), Hull (inside-right), M. Cotter (right-wing). Messrs. L. Martin and E. R. Chapman were the umpires. Manawatu took the offensive from the outset, and they tested severely the Wellington defence Manawatu's persistency gained them a territorial advantage, and in the ensuing play they failed to score following a penalty bully, which was taken by Nimmo (Wellington) and Morgan, the Manawatu centre-forward. Wellington attacked from this bully, following a fine clearance by Nimmo, but they could not penetrate their opponents' defence. At this stage the ground was becoming boggy, but this was no excuse for Wellington to miss an opportunity afforded by an open goal. The Wellington goalkeeper, C. Moore, was playing his usual sound game, but he was beaten by a ball from Loft, who accepted a pass from O'Brien. Wellington returned to the attack, and following a well-timed forward movement Hull sent the ball into the net, thus equalising. There was no further score at half-time. After the changeover Wellington dominated play, but owing to erratic stick-work among the forwards they failed to complete their movements. Manawatu's defence was very sound, although their forwards were slow to take advantage of their opportunities. In the final stages Morgan placed Manawatu one goal in the lead with a powerful drive into the net, a shot' which gave Moore no chance of stopping. Manawatu were pressing hard when the final whistle went, with the score 2-1 in their favour.
