LEAGUE OF MOTHERS.
PLEASANT AFTERNOON
There was a good attendance of menw bers and friends at a meeting of tha Hataitai branch of the League of Mothers. Mrs. c. W. Peterson presided and welcomed visitors from St. Clair, Wadestown, and Melrose. All members stood in silence as a mark of respect to the memory of the late Mrs. Tunley.
The proceedings opened with tha league's hymn, followed by the prayer. The glee choir gave much pleasure in their rendering of "Fair Daffodils" and "Sweet and Low." Mr. John Morris Linnaker contributed two songs, at also did Mrs. Tracey, both receiving hearty applause for their charming songs. Miss Campbell was equally successful with her elocutionary items. All the performers received sweet floral tributes.
Mrs. Eadie was the speaker for the afternoon and chose for her subject the life of the late Katherine Mansfield, on? of New Zealand's authors. She wasi ■; ari extremely versatile writer, said the' speaker, commencing at the early age of eight to write some charming poems. She was also very musical and loved her 'cello. Mrs. Eadie read several humorous passages from "The Garden Party," which appealed greatly to her audience. Katherine Mansfield's sensa of pathos, too, was very real, as one could sense in reading some of herlatest books and poems.' ' ■ ;. '."■. Mrs. Eadie was listened to most at-: tentively and was accorded a very hearty vote of thanks. Afternoon tea was served, when all enjoyed a social chat ..■.-.--.;■ • . ■ ■■■?■
Miss Molly Goodman (Wellington), who planned her arrival to be here ill time for the Coronation festivities, wilfi attend the International /Nurses', .Cox*-' :'-. fcrence in July. She is',;not here to represent New Zealand at the conferenceV: but being a New Zealand-trained nurse. ; she is interested. Miss Goodmarii* originally came from Surrey 15 years ago and is now spending her time visiting her relatives who are scattered all over England. She hopes to go to the Continent before returning- to the Dominion. ■ ..
