RED CROSS DANCE
REPRESENTATIVE GATHERING
Two huge vases of flamboyant scarlet poppies on either side of the stage, and spotlights shining on a. revolving silver ball hung from the ceiling made .he St. Francis Hall a gay place last night, when the social club of the Wellington branch of the New Zealand Red Cross Society gave a most enjoyable dance. On the alcove above the landing a tub of graceful dark and light blue delphiniums had been arranged, and these were also used to decorate the warm lounge upstairs, where comfortable chairs were available for those who were not dancing.
The guests were received by Mrs. Denistoun Wood (president of the social club), who wore a charming frock of black silk marocain, .with a black and white draped scarf, and by iMrs. Bunny, the organiser, who wore blue crepe.
A ballet, trained by Miss Jeane Home, gave an energetic Hungarian dance, "Czardas." Colourful costumes were worn, and made a : vivid picture as the dancers whirled and stamped with the traditional vigour of Hungary. Gaily-patterned cerise and purple skirts were worn by the girls, with purple corsets and white embroidered blouses and chaplets of flowers in the hair. The "boys" wore purple trousers and cerise tunics with embroidered blouses, and high scarlet Russian boots. Miss Shona Bennetts, wearing an authentic costume from Hungary, was soloist.
Coffee and a home-made buffet supper were served downstairs, where luxuriant purple and white convolvulus garlanded the four white pillars and arches, and the doorway. Vases of orange Iceland poppies gave a splash of colour in the room, where supper was spread on long tables covered with crisp white cloths.
The committee responsible for the success of the dance comprised Mesdames Bunny, C. Evans, Levett, Denistoun Wood, G. A. Haslett and Downes (secretaries), Latham, Ivin, Little, Patch, Hill, E. W. Lamberg, E. Stevens, Edwards, Steele, H. Marshall, G. Symonds, Angus, Preston, Fanthorpe, Lark,. Coad, Hendry, Webb, Miss M. Patterson, and Sergeant-Major Philpott, Major Porteous, and Mr. Ivin.
