HEALTH TALK

USE OF PREVENTION

"Prevention is Better Than Cure" was the title of the second lecture of the series being delivered by Mrs f Isabel Reid in the Dominion Farmers' Institute. Mr. A. Leigh Hunt was in the chair, and introduced the speaker, telling of the way she had gained her knowledge and experience abroad, in Switzerland and in England.

Mrs. Reid commenced her talk by commenting on the care bestowed on beautiful and precious gifts, instancing crystal and the disasters attendant upon lack of knowledge in handling it. She compared this with the child who comes into the home, a perfect example of the Creator's skill, but whose future was often marred by lack of knowledge or skill in the handling. When damage to the physical frame resulted, the way out for most people was what might be called "the ordinary way of repair."

Mrs. Reid told of some of the best modern ways of treatment which could be used with advantage if too great harm had not been done to vital organs of functions. She spoke also, of the lack of health in New Zealand—a new country with so many advantages in the way of space and climate—mentioning specially the dental troubles which should certainly not occur if proper food and health measures were taken. Interesting, and at the same time, alarming, charts were shown demonstrating the want of health in the country, with incidence increasing of some of the most alarming troubles.

The lack of fitness in the population was all preventable by natural methods if taken in time, and the charts shown with the requirements for health were particularly good. A further explanation about correct foods, posture, breathing, etc., was given, and relaxation mentioned as necessary for really good health.

The speaker urged that parents should be ready to learn the methods which would secure health, and therefore happiness, for the young people, for whose welfare they are responsible.
